Lang Son is a province located in the Northern region, about 4 hours driving from Hanoi. Tam Thanh cave is a natural grotto located on Ky Lua Street in the northwest of Lang Son City. Actually, there are three caves in this area including Nhat Thanh, Nhi Thanh, and Tam Thanh, but Tam Thanh is the biggest and the most well-known one. The cave is about 52 square meters and situated on the medium height of the mountain. The interesting thing about Tam Thanh Cave is that it goes through the mountain and has two entrances. One is the gate of Tam Thanh Pagoda while the other (on the other side of the mountain) opens a very picturesque view of the mountain.
The gate of the cave is 8m high. You have to walk 30 stone steps to get to the cave’s gate. And before that, in the foot of the mountain, you can visit Tam Thanh pagoda which is an ancient architecture built in the 15th century. The pagoda has a white Buddha statue with 202m in height and 65cm in width. When you get inside the cave, you can see a lot of statues and old steles with precious cultural and historical values. These steles have a very long age and they were the autographs of famous artists, poets, writers and patriots in feud time.
Tam Thanh Pagoda
Tam Thanh Cave is a masterpiece of nature. Like other limestone grottos in Vietnam, the cave has a lot of majestic stalactites with different shapes and sizes. Keep exploring the cave, you will see a beautiful turquoise lake inside the cave which is called Am Ti Lake. Especially, Am Ti Lake connects to a small path which the sun can expose through. It makes the whole scenery stunning and gorgeous like in heaven.
Finally, when you get to the other entrance of Tam Thanh Cave, you can have an amazing view of the mountainous area. Standing here, you can see immense paddy fields, majestic mountains, blue sky, and also small local villages on the mountains. And from here, you can see the famous Vong Phu Mountain (means “waiting for husband”). The rock on this mountain has a unique shape which looks like a woman holding a baby. That’s why local people has an old story about a lady named To Thi sitting on the top of the mountain to wait for her husband and she had waited for so long so that she became a stone. Vong Phu Stone
Tam Thanh Cave is one of the top four destinations in Lang Son, besides Nhi Thanh Cave, The Fortress of Mac Dynasty and To Thi Stone in Vong Phu Mountain. Nhi Thanh Cave is also in the system of three caves in Tam Thanh. It is a limestone grotto that goes through the mountain. However, what makes this cave special is that it has a stream and a waterfall running inside the cave. Like Tam Thanh, Nhi Thanh also has a pagoda called Tam Giac in the gate of the cave.
